I mean, that scene is word-for-word from the book, so don’t blame the movie! :) Yes, Gus is super pretentious at the start of the story. it’s a character flaw.
Gus wants to have a big and important and remembered life, and so he acts like he imagines people who have such lives act. So he’s, like, says-soliloquy-when-he-means-monologue pretentious, which is the most pretentious variety of pretension in all the world.
And then his performative, over-the-top, hyper-self-aware pretentiousness must fall away for him to really connect to Hazel, just as her fear of being a grenade must fall away. That’s what the novel is about. That is its plot.
Gus must make the opposite of the traditional heroic journey—he must start out strong and end up weak in order to reimagine what constitutes a rich and well-lived life.
Basically, a 20-second clip from the first five minutes of a movie is not the movie.
(Standard acknowledgement here that I might be wrong, that I am inevitably defensive of TFIOS, that it has many flaws, that there’s nothing wrong with critical discussion, and that a strong case could be made that I should not insert myself into these conversations at all.)
i wonder if teachers ever look at a student and think “this is one of those anime nerds”

this scene really got me. I think it’s a perfect example of people’s views on abortions.
For 75 years 1000+ children have been sent into the arena to fight for survival for the enjoyment of the richest people. Then along with that there are a million+ children across the other districts living in abstract poverty. All of them too, fighting for survival. The chance for them to move up in the world is virtually impossible because they don’t have the tools to do so and the people above them have kept them down as much as possible.
However the idea that a foetus, a blob of cells, is at risk and suddenly they stand up and protest.
Too much value is placed on the unborn, and not enough on those already alive.
Too much emphasis is put on saving trees than the unborn being killed. When babies are aborted they can still feel the pain. Then doctors have to pull their unborn corpse from the mother’s womb. I understand poverty and social injustice are huge problems. And I understand there are horrible situations that girls are put into meaning it wasn’t even their choice to have the possibility of a baby. That they need to finish education or can’t afford to have the baby. BUT DON’T YOU DARE PUT SUGAR ON ABORTION.
Last time I checked one and a half-acres of rainforst are lost every second with very tragic consequences for animals and people. Personally I think more emphasis should be put on saving trees as I think I’d like to be able to breathe fresh air and share my planet with animals rather than share it with more people and breathe polluted air.
Also the amount of people who are adults who die in painful circumstances is ten fold to the cells that are are taken from a woman. Please note that if a woman didn’t want to have a child, at all, she would abort the cells so early that there is no possible way that they could feel this pain.
If it was later on it would only be because her life was at risk. Isn’t the logic of a woman ending a pregnancy so she lives much nicer than a woman carrying a pregnancy on meaning she dies which in turn means the baby also dies? Or worse off the baby survives but is motherless?
I don’t know, maybe that’s just me. I know more people would be sad if I passed away rather than me aborting a baby that could kill me?
You have a very limited knowledge on the idea of how abortions work as well, doctors don’t always have to pull the unborn child from the womb. Again, like having an abortion this would only happen later on into the pregnancy.
Earlier on it’s like have an extremely painful period, a few days of agony and you bleed and then that’s it. It’s over.
Women need to finish their education. We are the gender most in poverty. By having a child and not finishing your education or finishing it but not being able to use it you are just placing yourself in the circle of poverty which you’ve gone and introduce a child into. A cycle that continues again and again.
My mother had me incredibly young, and because of that I’ve been brought up in poverty. It’s only because of the support of this government (UK) that I’ve been able to get to University and carry on my education.
When I have children (which I will only adopt) they won’t be a part of this poverty cycle. Many other countries, USA, India, Niger, etc etc. Any child born there to a woman in poverty will remain in poverty because there is little to help them get up.
If a child does climb out of the poverty cycle then that’s amazing but they’ve had just a few little tiny advantages that other children have not had.
Also I’m talking about accidental pregnancies where consent took place - what about women who are raped? Are you actually saying a woman who was raped, who was forced into sex, must carry the child of the rapist? Must give birth to it and then bring it up all while giving everything of herself up?
I applaud the women who can but if that was me, I would not be able to do such a thing. It’s an unwanted child, a product on non-consensual sex.
As for the Social Justice. I love children, I love them so much that I would never bring one of my own into the world. Why would I add to the population. Why scar my children of the disgusting injustices of the world?
No thank you, my family tree won’t end I have lots of cousins and sisters - but I know that I won’t be carrying it on. I’d rather adopt a child that hasn’t got a mother or father, or lives in a country that forgets its poor and needy. Probably because its mother was forced to carry it full term despite the health risk, also the country - like many - favour their richest. A little bit like The Capitol
friendly reminder that harry james potter lost his parents at the age of 1 and was abused by his aunt and uncle for 11 years of his life only to be sent into a life where the greatest dark wizard in the world was trying to kill him and through all this he still came out ok fuck if harry isn’t the most underrated character in the whole series
